Competitive team building activities in New Zealand

MICE editorial — 24 August 2026 Tier A

166 New Zealand operators run competitive team building — karting, escape rooms, clay target, amazing races and more. Here's how to choose.

Competitive formats are the most-requested style of corporate team building in New Zealand, and the most widely supplied. MICE currently lists 166 activity operators with a competitive category — roughly a third of every team-building operator in the directory.

What counts as competitive team building

Competitive activities put teams head-to-head against each other or against the clock. In the MICE data the recurring formats are escape rooms, karting and driving, clay target shooting, archery combat, mini golf and bowling, climbing walls, laser tag, and city-wide amazing-race style challenges. Browse the full set under /category/activities.

Where the operators are

Competitive operators are spread across all 16 MICE regions, but the depth is concentrated in the main conference cities:

  • Wellington — 32 operators, including Scapegoats Escape Rooms, Boomrock, Archery Combat NZ Wellington and Holey Moley Golf Club Wellington
  • Christchurch — 29 operators, including Alpine Ice, V8 Superdrive, Zone 67 Indoor Activities Arena and Hanmer Springs Attractions
  • Auckland — 23 operators, including Game Over Auckland, Action Matakana, Thrillzone and the All Blacks Experience
  • Invercargill — 11 operators, including Xtreme Karts, Dig This Invercargill and Real Country
  • Hamilton — 10 operators, including Hinterland Adventures & Paintball and Confinement Escape Rooms Hamilton

Queenstown, Rotorua, Tauranga, Napier, Taupō, Dunedin, Ashburton, Nelson, New Plymouth, Whangārei and Blenheim all list competitive operators as well, so a regional conference is not a constraint.

Matching format to group size

This is where most planners get caught. Of the 166 competitive operators, only 14 can take 100 or more people in a single session. The largest capacities in MICE are Corporate Challenge Events Auckland (up to 1,000), Velocity Valley in Rotorua (600), Rainbow's End Corporate Events (500), Action Matakana (400), Game Over Christchurch (400) and Skyline Queenstown (300).

If your delegate list is bigger than a single operator's ceiling, the usual answer is a rotation — split into pods and run several venues in parallel, or use one of the multi-activity providers that builds a bespoke programme.

Indoor, outdoor or either

Among competitive operators, 69 are indoor, 58 are outdoor and 39 run both. That matters for winter conferences and shoulder-season programmes — see also our guides on team building activities that come to your venue and choosing your dates.

Operators who come to you

35 competitive operators are mobile, meaning they can run the activity at your conference venue or offsite rather than requiring a transfer. Corporate Challenge Events, Team Up Events, Tailored Team Building, CluedUp and Archery Combat all appear in the mobile set across multiple cities. Mobile formats remove a transport leg entirely — worth costing against delegate transport before you book.

Where competitive fits in a programme

Competitive works best as a mid-conference energiser or the afternoon before a gala dinner. If you need something calmer to balance it, MICE also lists cultural, culinary, creative, wellness and CSR formats. Planning the wider programme? Start with venues, then activities, then transport.
