IESANZ "Light in Focus" 2026 conference postponed; NZ Chapter Awards Dinner proceeds at NZICC

MICE editorial — 10 October 2026 Auckland Tier B

The full IESANZ "Light in Focus" conference planned for 11–13 November 2026 at NZICC Auckland has been postponed by the IESANZ Board, with only the NZ Chapter Awards Dinner proceeding on 13 November 2026; the next full conference is slated for 2027.

Light in Focus, now postponed

The IESANZ Lighting Conference 2026, branded "Light in Focus: The Future Illuminated" and originally set for 11–13 November 2026 at Auckland's New Zealand International Convention Centre (NZICC), will not go ahead as the full conference it was planned to be. The official event site confirms that "the IESANZ Board has made the decision to postpone the Conference," citing current global challenges including conflict and the economic climate.

What remains on the ground in Auckland is a single evening function: the NZ Chapter IESANZ Awards Dinner 2026, which the organiser confirms is still proceeding on Friday 13 November 2026 at NZICC. The society has indicated the next full International Conference and Dinner will be held in 2027, with dates and location to be announced.

Who runs it

The event is controlled by the Illuminating Engineering Society of Australia and New Zealand (IESANZ), which brands itself "IES: The Lighting Society" and states its aim as promoting "the art and science of lighting, from both daylight and electrical sources." The society operates six regional chapters, one of which is New Zealand. Day-to-day event management is handled by Icon Conference and Event Management.

Who it was for

As listed by the NZICC, the conference was pitched at lighting designers, engineers, architects, researchers and manufacturers, with a programme spanning smart lighting, human-centric design, energy efficiency and LED innovation, and was to close with the IESANZ NZ Chapter Awards and the International IESANZ Awards. With the conference postponed, no speaker line-up or session programme is published; the awards component survives as the standalone 13 November dinner.

The venue

NZICC sits on Hobson Street in central Auckland within the SkyCity precinct, placing the awards dinner inside the city's core hotel and dining district with accommodation within walking distance. The venue is roughly 20 kilometres from Auckland Airport. For reporting context, the NZICC listing also carries a general caution that fraudulent event listings have been appearing online, and directs concerns to the venue.

Why it matters

A postponed national-and-trans-Tasman lighting conference is a notable data point for the NZ MICE calendar: it signals that even an established professional society is pulling back a flagship 2026 convention, while preserving the lower-cost, high-value awards dinner as a chapter touchpoint. The 2027 rescheduling is the event to watch.
