MICE, PCO and DMC explained: what each term means and which specialist you need for a conference or incentive in New Zealand.

MICE vs PCO vs DMC explained

Anyone planning a business event in New Zealand quickly runs into three acronyms — MICE, PCO and DMC. They describe different things: one is the industry, the other two are the specialist companies you might hire. Here's how they fit together.

### What MICE means MICE stands for Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions — the umbrella term for business events. It's the whole sector: the venues, the transport, the caterers, the AV crews and the planners who bring corporate and association gatherings to life. MICE is not a company you hire; it's the category all of the rest sits inside.

### What a PCO does A PCO (Professional Conference Organiser) manages the end-to-end delivery of a conference or meeting: programme, registration, abstract management, venue and speaker liaison, budgets and on-site running. PCOs are typically engaged by associations, universities and corporates running multi-day conferences. The MICE directory lists 96 PCOs, alongside 63 specialist event organisers who cover corporate events, launches and exhibitions.

### What a DMC does A DMC (Destination Management Company) is the local expert on the ground in a specific destination. DMCs handle incentive programmes, off-site events, activities, transport and social functions — the "experience" layer rather than the conference mechanics. They're most often used for incentive travel and international groups who need local knowledge. MICE lists 37 DMCs plus 37 incentive houses that specialise in reward and incentive travel.

### PCO or DMC — which do you need?

  • Running a conference with registration, sessions and speakers? Start with a PCO.
  • Hosting an incentive trip, or a group that needs local experiences and logistics? Talk to a DMC or incentive company.
  • Many larger programmes use both — a PCO for the conference and a DMC for the social and incentive elements.

### The rest of the MICE supply chain Beyond the planners, a business event draws on venues, delegate transport and team-building activities. Browse the full MICE directory to build your supplier shortlist by city and category.
