New Zealand Medical Sciences Congress marks its 20th edition at Christchurch's Te Pae in 2026

MICE editorial — 11 August 2026 Christchurch Tier A

The 20th New Zealand Medical Sciences Congress (MedSci) runs 31 August to 2 September 2026 at Te Pae Christchurch Convention Centre as part of Queenstown Research Week, which relocates to Christchurch for 2026. It brings together the NZ Society of Endocrinology and the Physiological Society of New Zealand alongside the wider QRW programme.

The New Zealand Medical Sciences Congress reaches its 20th edition in 2026, and for the first time in recent memory it does so under the banner of a Queenstown Research Week that has left Queenstown. According to the Queenstown Research Week organisers, QRW 2026 will run from 30 August to 4 September at Te Pae, the Christchurch convention centre, with the congress itself, listed as "The 20th New Zealand Medical Sciences Congress (Block A)," scheduled for Monday 31 August to Wednesday 2 September.

Despite the "Queenstown" in the umbrella name, the confirmed 2026 host city is Christchurch and the confirmed venue is Te Pae, matching the claimed venue. The organisers state plainly that meetings will take place at the Te Pae convention centre unless otherwise stated.

Who runs it

MedSci is run by New Zealand's biomedical and physiological research community rather than a commercial promoter. The organisers describe it as incorporating the annual meetings of the NZ Society of Endocrinology and the Physiological Society of New Zealand, together with interest groups drawn from the Auckland Bioengineering Institute, the Institute of Biomedical Technologies and the Otago Centre for Neuroendocrinology.

The congress is one of the three founding meetings from which Queenstown Research Week grew, alongside the Queenstown Molecular Biology Meetings and the Australasian Winter Conference on Brain Research. The Physiological Society of New Zealand traces its own history to 1972, and reports that since 2004 its yearly meeting has sat inside the MedSciNZ conference. That lineage places the 2026 gathering within a research week the organisers call New Zealand's biggest annual scientific meeting.

Who it's for

The audience is a multidisciplinary one: endocrinologists, physiologists, biomedical scientists, clinical researchers, bioengineers and neuroendocrinology specialists, spanning established academics, clinicians and students. Because MedSci runs as Block A within the broader Queenstown Research Week schedule, delegates overlap with the molecular biology, brain research and satellite communities meeting in the same building across the same week.

The venue

Te Pae Christchurch Convention Centre sits at 188 Oxford Terrace in the central city, on the banks of the Otakaro/Avon River and within walking distance of central Christchurch hotels, restaurants and the Cathedral Square precinct. Christchurch Airport lies roughly 10 to 12 kilometres from the city centre, giving the venue direct domestic and trans-Tasman air access for a largely Australasian delegate base. For an event that in 2026 folds several society meetings into one week, a single central-city convention centre allows the separate blocks and satellite meetings to share one location.

Why it matters for NZ MICE

The relocation of Queenstown Research Week to Christchurch for 2026 is itself the story for the business-events sector: a long-running, recurring scientific congress with a built-in multi-society audience choosing Te Pae for a full week of coordinated meetings. Recurring academic congresses of this kind deliver multi-night, off-peak, knowledge-economy visitation, and a 20th-edition milestone meeting anchoring a whole research week at a purpose-built convention centre is a visible marker of Christchurch's standing on the national conference circuit.
