NZIF's national forestry conference returns to Dunedin for 'Back to Business: Forward with Confidence'

MICE editorial — 10 August 2026 Dunedin Tier A

The New Zealand Institute of Forestry holds its 2026 annual conference, themed 'Back to Business: Forward with Confidence', at the Dunedin Centre from 26 to 28 August 2026, drawing forestry leaders, researchers and practitioners from across the country.

What the event is

The 2026 NZIF Conference, themed “Back to Business: Forward with Confidence”, runs from 26 to 28 August 2026 at the Dunedin Centre in Central Dunedin. It is the annual national conference of the New Zealand Institute of Forestry, and its framing is deliberate: after years in which, in the organiser's words, forestry in New Zealand has faced intense scrutiny and high-profile challenges, the conference sets out to reframe the narrative around success stories, innovation and partnerships that deliver both environmental and economic gains. Despite the listing's “Agriculture / primary industry” tag, this is a forestry-sector event: NZIF is the New Zealand Institute of Forestry.

Who runs it

The conference is organised by the New Zealand Institute of Forestry (NZIF). Established in 1927, NZIF represents New Zealand's forestry professionals across forest management, utilisation, processing, research, education and consulting, spanning production forests as well as forests used for conservation, carbon storage, erosion control and water quality. It is an Incorporated Society governed by its Council and represented regionally through local sections, and it maintains professional performance standards, a Registration Board and a Code of Ethics. The 2026 NZIF AGM is folded into the conference, held on 26 August after the CPD sessions and followed by networking drinks.

Who it is for and the programme

The conference is aimed at industry leaders, innovators, researchers and practitioners. The structure covers 1.5 days of conference sessions plus optional pre-conference CPD workshops on 26 August (running roughly 11:30am to 3:30pm), an awards dinner and field trips. The published speaker line-up is substantial and cross-sector, including the Minister of Forestry Hon Todd McClay and the Minister for Rural Communities Hon Mark Patterson, alongside figures from carbon forestry, timber processing, forest valuation, research, iwi and regional forestry. Non-members can attend the conference and CPD sessions by registering; the AGM is for members only.

The venue and delegate context

The conference is held at the Dunedin Centre, the city's multi-purpose events hub on The Octagon at 1 Harrop Street. Its centrepiece, the Dunedin Town Hall, is the largest and most iconic space in the complex and seats up to 2,200 guests, combining a heritage Victorian and early-20th-century building with modern conference functionality. For delegate movement, the venue is centrally located and generally walkable from most Dunedin hotels; the organiser has arranged accommodation options within the central city, and Dunedin Airport sits about 30km away, roughly a 35-minute drive. The venue offers complimentary Wi-Fi and an on-site AED.

Why it matters in NZ MICE

As the national gathering of New Zealand's forestry profession, the NZIF conference is a recurring fixture on the country's association-conference calendar, and its 2026 return to Dunedin's flagship civic venue positions it as a significant primary-sector event for the lower South Island. With central-government ministers on the programme and a deliberate reputation-rebuilding theme, it draws a national audience of decision-makers to Otago and underscores Dunedin's standing as a host city for mid-scale professional conferences.
