SEANZ 2026 puts a cross-party energy debate on the Pullman Auckland stage

MICE editorial — 16 August 2026 Auckland Tier A

The Sustainable Energy Association of New Zealand holds SEANZ 2026 — themed "Electric Elections" — at the Pullman Auckland on Thursday 3 and Friday 4 September 2026. SEANZ expects more than 600 local and international delegates each day, across an industry day, a three-stream symposium, an exhibition floor it bills as New Zealand's largest for solar and storage, and a gala dinner carrying the SEANZ Aotearoa Industry Awards.

The Sustainable Energy Association of New Zealand will stage its 2026 conference at the Pullman Auckland on Thursday 3 and Friday 4 September 2026, under the theme "Electric Elections". SEANZ says it expects more than 600 local and international delegates each day, across a two-day programme built around dedicated technical streams, what the association bills as New Zealand's largest exhibition for solar, battery storage, electrification and smart energy technologies, and an industry gala dinner carrying the SEANZ Aotearoa Industry Awards. The event listing gives an 8.00am start on the Thursday.

The theme is not decoration. 2026 is a New Zealand general election year, and SEANZ has built the conference around that fact. The programme's flagship session is a "Panel of Power" which, according to the association, brings together the Minister for Energy and energy spokespeople from the country's leading political parties to debate their energy policies — solar and battery energy storage in particular — alongside the wider state of the electricity system. SEANZ names Hon Simeon Brown (National), Hon Dr Megan Woods (Labour), Hon Shane Jones (NZ First), Qiulae Wong (The Opportunities Party) and Scott Willis (Greens). Putting a cross-party policy debate on a trade-show stage is an unusual move for a New Zealand association conference, and it is the clearest signal of what SEANZ thinks this edition is for.

Who runs it

SEANZ describes itself as independent of both government and the electricity supply industry. It represents manufacturers, system integrators, distributors, some retailers, technology companies, aggregators, software developers, finance-sector participants and energy end-users — the businesses that design, build and deliver solar, battery storage and integrated energy systems at residential, commercial and utility scale. Its stated vision is a low-cost, low-emissions, resilient energy network for Aotearoa New Zealand, and its remit spans both distributed energy resources on rooftops and utility-scale solar farms and grid-scale storage.

The association also runs SOLASSURE, which it describes as New Zealand's first independent quality-assurance programme for solar and battery installations, assessing providers on technical competence, installation quality, business practices, customer service and financial stability. That standards-setting role matters to the conference: professional development, standards sessions and installer training are core programme content, not filler.

The conference is a genuine recurring fixture with visible momentum. SEANZ 2025, themed "It's our time…", ran on Thursday 28 and Friday 29 August 2025 at the same Pullman Auckland, with the association expecting more than 500 attendees each day. The 2026 forecast of 600-plus a day, at the same venue in a comparable late-winter slot, represents a stated year-on-year lift rather than a speculative first outing. The partner roster has grown accordingly, with platinum, gold, and events, awards and expo tiers listed for 2026.

What is on the programme

The two days are structured differently. Thursday runs as an industry day covering sector updates, new technology, standards and installer panel discussions, with evening networking. Friday runs as a symposium with a full industry update, guest presenters and panel discussions, split across three streams — The Big Picture, an Installer Stream, and a Utility Scale Solar Stream. The exhibition covers residential, commercial, industrial and utility-scale solar in a dedicated space with local and global suppliers, manufacturers and innovators. The gala dinner and awards evening is hosted by the SEANZ chair and team, with a guest speaker and MC the association has kept under wraps.

Who it is for

The stated audience is broad but coherent: installers, engineers, designers, consultants, developers, manufacturers, suppliers, investors, policymakers and solution providers. The dedicated streams are the structural answer to a sector that now spans a rooftop retrofit crew and a utility-scale solar farm developer within the same membership — two audiences with very little overlap in day-to-day technical concerns, but a shared interest in what happens to regulation and market design after the election.

The venue

The Pullman Auckland sits at the corner of Waterloo Quadrant and Princes Street at the top of the Auckland CBD, on the edge of the university precinct and adjacent to Albert Park. The hotel describes itself as one of the largest inner-city meeting hotels in Auckland, with more than 3,000sqm of flexible function space across 16 adaptable venues and 321 guest rooms, suites and apartments. Its principal space is the Princes Ballroom, at more than 800sqm indoors plus a 300sqm terrace, with a 4.7m ceiling, a private pre-function area, operable walls for reconfiguration, and installed lighting, projection and audio.

That combination is the practical reason the event has returned here. A conference of 600-plus a day that needs a plenary room, breakout streams, a substantial exhibition floor and a gala dinner in the same building — plus delegate accommodation on site — has a short list of Auckland options, and a single-property solution removes the transfer problem entirely for the significant share of delegates travelling in from outside Auckland. The CBD location also puts delegates within walking distance of the waterfront, Britomart and the Queen Street retail spine for anything the programme does not cover.

Why it matters for New Zealand business events

SEANZ 2026 is a useful case study in an association conference that has grown by sharpening its editorial premise rather than chasing scale for its own sake. Attaching the programme to a national election, and securing named political principals from five parties for a single debate session, converts a trade gathering into something with news value — which in turn drives attendance, exhibitor interest and partner spend. For the wider sector, it is also a reminder that New Zealand's energy transition now generates enough commercial activity to sustain a two-day, 600-delegate exhibition-anchored conference in its own right.
