Survey and Spatial New Zealand holds its 2026 annual conference at Cordis, Auckland from 9 to 11 September, with registrations open, a published three-day programme, five workshop streams and Sir Graham Henry closing the event.
Survey and Spatial New Zealand will hold its 2026 annual conference at the Cordis, Auckland from Wednesday 9 to Friday 11 September, with registrations open and the full programme already published. The organiser's programme document sets out a three-day structure: a Wednesday built around an S+SNZ council meeting, sponsor-run technical training workshops and the organisation's Annual General Meeting at 5pm, followed by the Tuatahi First Fibre welcome function from 6pm; then two full conference days on the Thursday and Friday. Thursday opens at 9am and closes at 4.25pm ahead of an awards night, and Friday runs from 9am to a 3.45pm close.
The technical spine is unusually well defined for an association conference at this stage. Thursday's plenary sessions include a presentation from the Minister of Land Information, a cadastral update from Surveyor-General Anselm Haanen and an economic update from Tony Alexander. Friday's plenary covers survey requirements under the Three Waters national engineering design standards, a year-end report on Wellington City Council's Underground Asset Register, a SouthPAN update from Land Information New Zealand, cadastral teaching changes at the University of Otago and a Resource Management Act update. Former All Blacks coach Sir Graham Henry is billed for the 3pm closing session on Friday.
Around those plenaries the organiser has scheduled five blocks of three concurrent workshop streams, labelled A through E, with delegates choosing one session per block. Topics listed in the programme include automated and manual monitoring of the Canterbury Museum heritage rebuild, a hydrography skills and standards panel, coding with AI for non-developers, continuous GNSS monitoring for landslide risk, macros and checklists for cadastral datasets, surveying on Auckland's City Rail Link, the Moa Point sludge minimisation facility, 3D laser scanning case studies, aerial LiDAR for water boundary determinations and a land development engineering panel.
The conference is run by Survey and Spatial New Zealand, which describes the annual event on its own site as "the biggest CPD event of the year for surveying and spatial professionals". The organisation lists a long run of past editions in rotating host cities, including Dunedin in 2013, Napier in 2017, Nelson in 2018 under the theme "Ambitious, Diverse, Connected", Auckland in 2019 as "Shaping Tomorrow's Communities", Auckland again in 2021 as "Building Back Better", and Rotorua's Novotel Lakeside Hotel in 2022. The 2025 edition ran at Te Pae, Christchurch under the theme "Transforming the Landscape", according to the Spatial Source events calendar, which makes 2026 a genuine return to Auckland rather than a listing error. The 2026 theme is given as "Going to the Next Level" on an exhibitor listing, though that wording does not appear on the organiser pages checked. The named event manager is Jenny Houdalakis.
The organiser defines the audience broadly: land development, urban design, resource management, civil engineering, surveying across cadastral, hydrographic and engineering disciplines, positioning and measurement, and spatial and GIS work. The speaker list reflects that spread, drawing from LINZ, Wellington City Council, Aurecon, the City Rail Link, Leica Geosystems, GSI Insurance Partners, Synergy Group and the University of Otago's School of Surveying.
The social and recognition programme is substantial for an event of this size. It includes a welcome networking function, the GSI Awards Evening 2026 on the Thursday, a fellow members' dinner, an industry exhibition with sponsor showcases, a Young Professionals lunch for delegates under 35 on the Thursday, a Women in Surveying and Spatial lunch on the Friday, cadastral award winner presentations and a Kairuri Trust scholarship winner presentation.
Cordis, Auckland sits at 83 Symonds Street in Grafton, uptown and within walking distance of the city's museum and galleries, according to the Auckland Convention Bureau. The hotel's own site lists 20 event venues. The Great Room is a 1,160 square-metre pillarless ballroom that seats a banquet of up to 800 and divides into four spaces of 200 to 440 square metres; the Crystal Room takes 200 for a banquet or 300 theatre-style; the Jade Room seats up to 294 and opens onto an outdoor terrace. Smaller Gallery Rooms range from 30 to 90 square metres, with boardrooms for 10 to 12. The hotel reports 642 rooms and suites, so delegate accommodation sits on site, and the conference has an accommodation block in place. The organiser puts the hotel roughly 30 minutes from Auckland Airport by taxi, rideshare, airport shuttle or public transport.
This is a textbook association conference: three days, an AGM, an awards dinner, a trade exhibition and a paid workshop layer, held in early September shoulder season when midweek hotel demand needs filling. The rotation model matters commercially, because the business genuinely moves between Auckland, Christchurch, Rotorua, Nelson, Napier and Dunedin, and between purpose-built convention centres such as Te Pae and hotel conference floors such as the Cordis. Running plenary, breakouts, exhibition, banquet and accommodation on a single site is a delegate-retention decision as much as a logistical one, and the sponsor-run technical workshops mean a meaningful share of the event's value sits with exhibitors rather than registrations alone.
