The University of Waikato's Centre for Environmental, Resources and Energy Law will host the 24th IUCN Academy of Environmental Law Colloquium at its Hamilton Campus, confirmed by the University for 28 June to 2 July 2027 on the theme of Earth System Governance and Planetary Boundaries.
The IUCN Academy of Environmental Law (IUCNAEL) Colloquium is the flagship annual gathering of the global environmental-law research community, rotating each year between member law faculties around the world. The University of Waikato has been awarded the hosting of the 24th Colloquium, which it will hold at its Hamilton Campus. Per the University's official event listing, the theme is Earth System Governance and Planetary Boundaries.
The host is the Centre for Environmental, Resources and Energy Law (CEREL), established in 2011 and hosted by Te Piringa – Faculty of Law at the University of Waikato, under Director Professor Trevor Daya-Winterbottom. CEREL is convening the event on behalf of the IUCN Academy of Environmental Law, the international network of universities and scholars that owns the Colloquium series.
The Colloquium draws environmental, natural-resources, energy and climate-law academics, postgraduate researchers and practitioners from IUCNAEL member institutions worldwide. The University has stated the dedicated Colloquium website will open on 11 December 2026 to receive abstracts and registrations, indicating a standard call-for-papers academic conference format.
The University of Waikato lists the event as running Monday 28 June to Friday 2 July 2027 at the University of Waikato, Hamilton Campus. The Hamilton Campus sits within Hamilton (Kirikiriroa), served by Hamilton Airport with domestic connections and road links to Auckland Airport for international arrivals, with campus and central-city accommodation available for visiting delegates.
As a rotating international academic congress, the Colloquium brings a multi-day inflow of overseas legal scholars and postgraduate delegates into Hamilton, making it a notable association-sector conference for the Waikato region.
