Waves 2026: New Zealand's aquatics sector convenes at Cordis Auckland

MICE editorial — 10 August 2026 Auckland Tier A

Waves 2026 is Recreation Aotearoa's premier annual aquatics conference, running 26–27 August 2026 at the Cordis Hotel in Auckland, with an associated lifeguard competition, the Aquatic Awards and field trips extending the programme across 25–28 August.

What Waves 2026 is

Waves 2026 is New Zealand's premier aquatics conference, held Wednesday 26 and Thursday 27 August 2026 at the Cordis Hotel in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland. Each year the country's aquatics industry gathers to learn, connect and celebrate success across the sector.

The 2026 edition carries the theme "Beyond our doors – aquatic facilities in the wider community," examining how pools and leisure centres connect people, support water safety, strengthen community wellbeing and respond to environmental events and civil emergencies. The programme opens at 08:30 with registration, followed by a Pōwhiri, and is captured by the whakataukī the organisers have chosen for the event: "He pūkenga wai, he nohonga tangata, he putanga kōrero — Where water meets, people meet. Where people meet, knowledge flows."

Who runs it

The conference is organised by Recreation Aotearoa, the national peak body for the recreation and aquatics sector in New Zealand, which stages Waves as its flagship aquatics event and administers the accompanying 2026 Aquatic Awards. The organiser lists its aquatics programme lead as the event contact.

The speaker line-up reflects the sector's standing, including Glen Scanlon, Chief Executive of Water Safety New Zealand; Katie Barry, Disability & Inclusion Programme Manager at Recreation Aotearoa; Rebecca Thorby, Senior Evaluation Advisor at Sport NZ; and specialists in aquatic facility design, asset management and frontline wellbeing.

Who it's for and the programme

Waves draws aquatics professionals from across New Zealand — facility operators, lifeguards, local councils, water-safety bodies and industry suppliers. The two conference days run across plenary and two breakout streams, with sessions such as "With your help, no one drowns," the societal value of facilities, an Aquatic Facility Energy Efficiency Toolbox and staff care following the response to the Mount Maunganui slip.

The wider programme extends the week: the OPSEC National Pool Lifeguard Competition takes place Tuesday 25 August at West Wave Pool & Leisure Centre in Henderson, the 2026 Aquatic Awards are held on the Thursday evening at the Cordis, and field trips run around Auckland on Friday 28 August. An exhibition hall features aquatics suppliers including Aqua Products, Aqualine, ProMinent NZ and WaterPro.

The venue and delegate context

Waves 2026 is confirmed at Cordis, Auckland, at 83 Symonds Street on the edge of the Auckland CBD — matching the listed venue. The organiser notes the hotel is a few minutes' walk from bars, restaurants and the waterfront and offers on-site amenities including a gym and pool, and has secured a delegate room block.

For delegates travelling in, Recreation Aotearoa lists additional CBD accommodation options including the Grand Millennium, Sudima Auckland City and Four Points by Sheraton Auckland, plus the Naumi Hotel at Auckland Airport for those with early or late flights. Auckland Airport is the main international and domestic gateway, roughly 20 km south of the Symonds Street venue.

Why it matters in NZ MICE

Waves is a recurring, sector-defining association conference that reliably brings the national aquatics community into central Auckland, combining a two-day conference, a national skills competition, an industry awards dinner and a trade exhibition. Its multi-day footprint at a major CBD hotel, with associated hotel room blocks across several Auckland properties, makes it a representative example of the association-driven business events that anchor New Zealand's MICE calendar.
