Jersey New Zealand will host the triennial World Jersey Conference in February 2027, with the core conference week based at Novotel Hamilton Tainui and LIC in the Waikato and a wider tour running the length of the country. More than 80 delegates from up to 39 member countries of the World Jersey Cattle Bureau are expected.
Jersey New Zealand (JerseyNZ) will host the World Jersey Conference 2027, bringing breeders, scientists and dairy-industry leaders from around the globe to the Waikato next February. Held under the theme "The Next Generation," the gathering is the triennial international conference of the World Jersey Cattle Bureau, and 2027 marks the first time it returns to New Zealand soil in some years. It also coincides with JerseyNZ's 125th anniversary.
The full programme runs from 8 to 26 February 2027 and spans both islands, but its hub is a conference week based in the Waikato from 13 to 18 February. Formal conference sessions are held at Novotel Hamilton Tainui in Hamilton, with surrounding days built around on-farm visits, genetics and research sessions, and industry networking. More than 80 delegates from up to 39 World Jersey Bureau member countries are expected to attend.
The host is Jersey New Zealand, the national breed body representing Jersey dairy farmers, with event management handled by Lime Events. The conference sits under the World Jersey Cattle Bureau, which now trades as World Jersey. Founded in 1951 and incorporated by the Royal Court of the Island of Jersey, the bureau represents Jersey breeders worldwide across five world regions and holds an international conference and tour every three years in a member country, with annual meetings in the years between. The 2025 edition was hosted by Jersey Australia, placing New Zealand next in the cycle for 2027.
The conference week opens with a pōwhiri and welcome function in Taupiri before moving into sessions at Novotel Hamilton Tainui. A full day is centred on LIC, taking in a bull farm visit, industry presentations and a methane research farm tour, alongside the Jersey Pride Sale. Other fixtures include the Jersey Classic Show at Kihikihi, herd visits to properties such as Thornwood Jerseys and Kuku Jerseys, a CRV-hosted morning, and a JerseyNZ 125-year celebration and prizegiving at The Narrows in Hamilton. Optional pre-conference touring runs through Northland and post-conference legs travel the lower North Island and the South, finishing in Queenstown.
The audience is squarely the Jersey dairy sector: breeders, farmers, scientists and industry leaders, with a deliberate focus on next-generation farmers. Genetics and breeding companies, technology providers, researchers and agribusinesses are also catered for, with trade stands and sponsorship built into the programme.
Hamilton sits at the centre of the Waikato, New Zealand's largest dairying region, which makes it a natural base for a conference anchored in on-farm visits. Hamilton Airport (Mystery Creek) connects the city to domestic routes, and it is roughly a 90-minute to two-hour drive south of Auckland and Auckland Airport, the main international gateway most overseas delegates will arrive through. The conference sessions are based at Novotel Hamilton Tainui, a full-service hotel in the central city on the banks of the Waikato River, while much of the technical programme runs out to LIC's campus at Newstead, on the city's eastern edge. Surrounding venues such as Kihikihi, Otorohanga and The Narrows are all within comfortable driving distance, and the itinerary notes several days are serviced by coach transfers from the conference hotel.
An international conference that draws delegates from dozens of countries for a multi-week itinerary is a meaningful win for the Waikato's business-events profile, which is more often overshadowed by Auckland, Wellington and Queenstown. It puts Hamilton's convention-grade hotel capacity and the region's research and genetics infrastructure — LIC among them — in front of a global primary-industry audience, and pairs the formal conference programme with the kind of on-farm and cultural touring that showcases the wider region. For a sector-specific event rooted in dairy, the Waikato is close to an ideal host, and the 2027 edition is a useful demonstration of how a national breed body and a specialist events manager can build a long-form, nationwide programme around a compact Hamilton-based conference core.
