About 4th Wall Theatre

About this place

The 4th Wall Theatre is a small independent theatre at 11 Baring Terrace in Strandon, about five minutes from the New Plymouth CBD. The entrance is off Devon Street East, roughly 60 metres from the corner. The building was originally a church and was converted over a period of about two years, opening as a theatre in April 2013.

The venue runs across three levels and seats cabaret style. The air-conditioned main auditorium holds 102 people at tables: Row A has five tables seating six, and Rows B, C and D have six tables of four each. Upstairs, the Gallery seats 26 on two-seater leather couches, sold on a general admission basis. There is a fully licensed bar with a wide range of drink options, and tables are set with carafes of water so guests can take drinks through to their seats during a performance. Complimentary antipasto platters are served at the bar, and for some shows platter options can be pre-booked with tickets.

Parking is off-street and well lit at the rear of the theatre, with additional monitored off-street parking in the adjacent VERBREC Ltd car park, entered from Devon Street East or Baring Terrace. Level access is available for patrons with mobility restrictions, and wheelchair spaces can be arranged in Row A. The box office opens Friday afternoons and Saturday mornings, or by appointment.

For business events, the theatre offers group hosting and markets this for entertaining clients or engaging staff around a live performance. That makes it a straightforward option for an incentive night, a team social or the evening component of a conference programme.

One real constraint is worth stating plainly. Outside scheduled performance dates the theatre is only hired for events that are theatre-based or that incorporate some form of theatrical content, such as film fundraisers, charity performance fundraisers or dance recitals. It is not a general-purpose conference or meeting room. Planners comparing New Plymouth venues should treat the 4th Wall as an evening entertainment venue rather than a daytime meeting space.
