About Aston Norwood

Aston Norwood, Kaitoke

Aston Norwood is a private garden estate, function centre and hospitality property at 1747 State Highway 2, Kaitoke, north of Upper Hutt in the Wellington region. It combines 14 acres of established gardens, a restaurant and bar, a cafe, a garden centre and nursery, on-site accommodation, and a long-running weddings and events business. Its Google rating is 4.2.

### History

Owners Mark and Fiona Rammell bought the land in 1992 with the intention of creating a private garden, wedding venue and cafe, developing it from a rundown cattle farm from 1994 onwards. The gardens have been more than 30 years in the making. Their sons established the garden centre and nursery, which supplies plants across Upper Hutt and nationally, and hundreds of weddings have been held in the functions centre.

### The Duke Bar & Restaurant

In September 2026, Wairarapa operators Theo Wijnsma and John Richards - previously of Brac & Bow in Featherston - opened The Duke Bar & Restaurant in what had been Aston Norwood's function space, transforming it in three and a half weeks ahead of the spring season. The distinctive bar from Brac & Bow was dismantled, transported over the Remutaka Hill and reinstalled as the centrepiece of the new room.

The menu is contemporary bistro - generous, recognisable dishes shaped by seasonal produce, European influence and occasional nods to Wijnsma's Dutch heritage. A notable format point for group budgeting: seasonal sharing sides are included with every main and served family-style, with mains including sides priced at $44. Sourcing is local, drawing on Wairarapa, Wellington and wider New Zealand producers, and the wine list carries a strong Wairarapa representation.

Importantly for planners, Wijnsma and Richards have also taken over the property's weddings and functions operation and the on-site Chalet accommodation overlooking the gardens. That means food, service, events and accommodation now sit under one experienced hospitality team. Their other businesses include Mother Goose Bar & Kitchen and Brac & Bow Catering, which caters weddings and events across the Wellington region.

### Three Trees Cafe

The cafe has been rebranded as Three Trees Cafe, with an interior upgrade and menu refresh, and is run by Mark and Fiona's son Sam. It operates independently of The Duke.

### Gardens and seasonal events

The gardens include a hedge maze, ponds, an archery lawn, a river and waterfall, a rowboat, a sunflower field and hundreds of cherry blossom trees, planted among pleached London planes, 30-year-old oaks and golden elms. Gardens are open daily 9am to 4pm outside event dates, by ticket.

Seasonal events give an incentive programme a genuine hook:

  • Blossom Valley - the annual spring cherry blossom celebration across the 14 acres, described as New Zealand's highest number and density of mature cherry blossom trees in one place, scheduled around the bloom.
  • Autumn Valley - autumn colour by day, with an illuminated evening walk after dark.
  • Easter egg hunt - now drawing more than 3,000 visitors.

Annual passes with garden centre and cafe perks are available on site.

### Suitability for events and group dining

Aston Norwood is a full-property events venue rather than a restaurant with a side offer. It has a purpose-built functions business with decades of experience, a restaurant and bar under proven operators, on-site accommodation, and 14 acres of grounds that provide both a setting and an activity in their own right. That combination suits a Wellington-region offsite, an incentive day, a partner programme or a conference dinner away from the city.

Specific room capacities, delegate packages and AV are not published, so an organiser will need a direct quote. The activity-rich gardens, the archery lawn and the seasonal festivals are the differentiators - and worth timing a programme around, since blossom and autumn colour are short windows.
