Astra Motor Lodge is a purpose-built motel at 47 Kahikatea Drive in Melville, on the southern approach to Hamilton. It offers apartment-style units rather than conventional motel rooms, and was designed from the outset around quiet, comfortable sleeping — the complex uses solid concrete construction and double-glazed hush glass, with pocket-sprung beds in every unit.

Rooms and facilities

Units are studio and one-bedroom apartments with king and super-king beds that can be split into two singles. Each has a fully equipped kitchen or kitchenette with fridge and tea and coffee making facilities, air conditioning or heat pump heating, ultra-fast broadband and a wall-mounted 32-inch TV with Sky. Bathrooms feature large double showers, some with twin heads, and spa baths are available in selected units.

On-site facilities include a guest laundry, a dry cleaning service and parking close to the units. All rooms are smoke free, with a designated outdoor smoking area. Continental breakfasts are delivered to the room the night before and gluten-free and cooked options are available. Reception operates 7am to 10pm year-round.

Location and MICE fit

The motel is roughly a five-minute drive from the Hamilton CBD and Hamilton Gardens, with Hamilton Lake a short walk away. Hamilton Airport is about a 15-minute drive and the coach terminal around 10 minutes. It sits within a short walk of both Braemar Hospital and Waikato Hospital, which makes it a long-standing choice for medical and health-sector visitors.

For business events, Astra Motor Lodge has no meeting or conference space of its own. Its value is as delegate accommodation: self-contained apartments with kitchens and laundry suit multi-night stays, and the southern-city position works well for delegates driving to Mystery Creek, the airport or venues south of the river. Delegates attending events at Claudelands Event Centre or Waikato Stadium will need a short drive or taxi.
