Backpackers Central Hamilton is a hostel at 846 Victoria Street, in the heart of the Hamilton CBD on the city's main street. It is identifiable by its green signage and is a few minutes' walk from the Hamilton Transport Centre.

Rooms

The hostel states its inventory as 38 dorm beds, 7 doubles, 3 twins, 1 triple and quadruple rooms, 1 family room and 18 singles. Rooms are grouped into three tiers:

• Backpackers Dorms — four-bed male, female and mixed dorms with shared kitchen and bathroom facilities, a free locker in each room and linen supplied.
• Central Lodge — private single, double and twin rooms with shared kitchen and bathrooms. Each has a mini-fridge, wardrobe, wall-mounted flat TV, bedside table and table or chair. Linen and towels supplied.
• Central Suites — ensuite single, double and twin rooms plus standard triple and quadruple rooms and an ensuite family room (queen bed plus two bunks).

Facilities

The hostel offers 24-hour access via electronic swipe key, free unlimited high-speed Wi-Fi, free large lockers, free private parking subject to availability, well-appointed communal kitchens, communal lounge and dining areas, a deck overlooking the main street, guest laundry and guest computers. Tour and shuttle bookings can be arranged on site. Reception operates 8am to 10pm.

Location and MICE fit

The hostel is about a six-minute walk to the coach terminal and most city amenities, and roughly a 20-minute drive from Hamilton Airport. Claudelands Arena, the rugby and cricket grounds, Founders Theatre, bars, restaurants and supermarkets are all close by.

There is no meeting or conference room here. Backpackers Central positions group bookings as a speciality, with special group rates available on enquiry, and the mix of dorms, singles and private ensuite rooms lets an organiser place a whole group across a range of budgets in one building. That makes it a realistic option for sporting teams, student and youth groups, touring performers and crew, and cost-conscious delegates attending events at Claudelands Event Centre or Waikato Stadium — both within easy reach of the central Victoria Street location.
