About

About Coronet Peak

Coronet Peak is a ski area on the southern slopes of the 1,649-metre peak of the same name, about 20 minutes' drive from central Queenstown and seven kilometres from Arrowtown. It is best known as New Zealand's first commercial ski field: the country's first rope tow, designed by Queenstown engineer and inventor Bill Hamilton and commissioned by tourism pioneer Harry Wigley, was installed here in 1947. The mountain now operates extensive snowmaking and runs one of New Zealand's longest ski days, with early-morning First Tracks sessions and scheduled night skiing.

Function spaces

Alongside its ski operation, Coronet Peak markets itself as a year-round events venue with three distinct function spaces. The base building holds two wings, each seating up to around 400 people, together with a bar and smaller rooms for more intimate gatherings. The venue advertises capability across a broad range, from groups of about 30 up to 600 people, depending on configuration and which spaces are combined.

Heidi's Hut is a separate mountainside lodge used for smaller occasions — listings describe it as suiting seated gala dinners of up to about 30 guests, or cocktail functions of up to about 50. The Peak Club is positioned as an exclusive space for corporate hosting, executive strategy sessions and VIP entertaining.

Event delivery is handled in partnership with HQNZ, an event management company that specialises in large-scale events in the Queenstown region.

Incentive and group activity

The mountain's main draw for MICE buyers is the combination of venue and activity in one location. In winter, on-mountain team-building programmes and night-ski group events can be built around a function; the panoramic outlook over the Wakatipu basin is a consistent feature of the venue's positioning. Coronet Peak also hosts events through the summer months, when the access road opens the site to conferencing, dinners and offsite gatherings without snow operations.

Practical notes

Access is by a sealed but winding alpine road, so group transport is typically coached in — a factor worth building into event timings, particularly for evening functions in winter conditions. There is no accommodation on the mountain; delegates are usually based in town.

Suitability for MICE: a strong fit for incentive programmes, conference offsite dinners, awards nights and team-building days that want an alpine setting close to town, with scale options from a 30-person executive session to a 600-person function. It sits naturally within a wider Queenstown venues programme rather than as a standalone conference base.
