About Hotel d'Urville

Hotel d'Urville is a ten-room boutique heritage hotel at 52 Queen Street in central Blenheim, in the heart of the Marlborough wine region. It combines individually designed accommodation with an on-site restaurant and lounge bar, and suits small executive groups, wine-country incentives and visiting delegates who want character accommodation within walking distance of the Blenheim town centre.

The building and its history

The hotel occupies the former Public Trust Office building, completed in 1923 to a design by the Wellington architect William Gray Young — one of his early commissions. Gray Young went on to a 60-year career and more than 500 buildings, including the Wellington and Christchurch Railway Stations and several Victoria University College buildings, and was awarded the New Zealand Institute of Architects Gold Medal in 1932 for his design of the Wellesley Club.

The building is unusual for its period in being constructed of 400mm-thick concrete walls reinforced with deformed steel rather than the unreinforced masonry then common; four imposing concrete columns front the street. During the 2016 Marlborough earthquakes the only damage recorded was to internal plasterboard walls added in later years. It is one of the few Heritage New Zealand listed buildings remaining in Blenheim, and the hotel celebrated the building's centenary in 2023.

A vault sat at the core of the original building across both floors, and most of the original steel vault doors remain in place, now serving as entry doors to guest rooms. The Public Trust occupied the building until the mid-1990s, when a restaurant was established on the ground floor; nine hotel rooms were created on the first floor and one on the ground floor in the early 2000s. A copy of the original building plan can be inspected at the hotel.

Rooms

There are ten rooms in total — nine on the first floor, reached by a sweeping staircase, plus an executive suite on the ground floor. No two rooms are alike, with an eclectic mix of four-poster beds, exotic fabrics and antiques, and all have been renovated by the current owner. Organisers should note that, as a heritage building, the hotel has no lift, which is a material accessibility consideration when placing delegates.

Food and beverage

D'Urville Restaurant & Lounge operates on site, describing its cooking as local fare with a French twist, seasonally driven and matched to Marlborough wines. The restaurant serves Tuesday to Saturday from 4pm. A separate downstairs Lounge Bar offers cocktails and a curated wine selection, serving Tuesday to Saturday, 5pm to 9pm. Guests are invited to contact the hotel directly with specific requests.

Suitability for meetings and events

Hotel d'Urville does not publish dedicated conference rooms, delegate capacities or AV specifications. For business events its strength is as a small, high-character property for exclusive use: ten rooms, a restaurant and a lounge bar under one heritage roof, in central Blenheim and within easy reach of the Marlborough vineyards and Blenheim Airport. That profile fits board retreats, small incentive rewards, wine-focused hosted programmes and private dinners. Planners with larger delegate numbers or formal plenary requirements should confirm availability and arrangements directly with the hotel.
