Jimmy Jack's Rib Shack & Craft Bar is a barbecue restaurant and craft bar at 117 Bank Street in central Whangārei. It is the second of two New Zealand sites, alongside the original in Paihia, and the business says it has operated in New Zealand for more than ten years.
The menu centres on low-and-slow smoked barbecue, cooked in Southern Pride smokers. Ribs are the signature, served in a Kiwi-adapted barbecue sauce, with rib boards, wings, smoked chicken and charcoal-smoked beef burgers alongside. The kitchen also lists salads, sizzle plates, steaks, seafood, vegetarian options, fresh breads and desserts. The bar pours Good George (a local craft brewery), Tuatara, Moa and Monteith's.
The Whangārei venue has several indoor and outdoor areas that can be booked as private function spaces. Set menus need to be pre-ordered. Bookings of up to 25 people can be requested online or by email, and larger groups are arranged by phone or email. Walk-ins are welcome, but seating is not guaranteed.
Open Tuesday to Sunday from 11:30am and closed Mondays, plus Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day (confirm current hours with the venue).
