Lan Yuan, the Dunedin Chinese Garden, is a traditional Chinese scholar's garden at 39 Queens Gardens, Dunedin. Its website describes it as the only truly authentic Chinese scholar's garden in the Southern Hemisphere and as a miniature of a traditional Chinese landscape painting. It grew from a wish to celebrate Dunedin's Chinese heritage and the city's sister city relationship with Shanghai.
The garden is designed as a place to walk, relax, drink tea and take in changing seasonal scenery. The site lists a tea house, gift shop and tower room, as well as free Wi-Fi, school visits and accessibility information, and a programme of events and self-guided tours.
Venue hire is offered for functions and weddings, which makes the garden a distinctive option for a cultural experience, a small celebration or a themed group activity during a Dunedin programme. Capacities and hire details are not published on the main page, so planners should confirm numbers, catering arrangements and availability directly with the garden team (chinesegarden@dcc.govt.nz or 03 477 3248).
