About Mosgiel Coronation Hall

Mosgiel Coronation Hall is a heritage community theatre on Gordon Road in Mosgiel, the Taieri township that forms part of the Dunedin City Council area. The building is owned by the council but is actively managed by a volunteer committee, which runs the hire programme and has driven its recent restoration.

History

The hall opened on 11 July 1912 as Mosgiel's town hall, and originally housed the library, reading room, mayor's office and council chambers alongside the public hall. Contemporary accounts of the opening record the hall as measuring around 80ft by 50ft overall, including a stage some 17 and a half feet deep, with seating for 620 people and standing room for around 700. Behind the stage were two retiring rooms and a supper room at ground level, with caretaker's quarters upstairs.

The building lost its civic role after a new council office opened in 1979 and subsequently fell into a period of disuse. It has since been brought back into regular use as a performance and community venue. A new roof was completed in 2020, and in 2023 the original mid-century seating was replaced, with reports at the time putting the refreshed auditorium at roughly 350 seats.

The space

The main auditorium is a single-level theatre with tiered rows facing a stage, which makes it well suited to presentations, performances and screenings where clear sightlines matter. The historic fabric of the building gives the room a period character that a modern conference room cannot match.

Suitability

Mosgiel Coronation Hall is best understood as a theatre and community hall rather than a conference centre. For MICE purposes it suits single-stream events with an audience focus: conferences and seminars run in plenary format, AGMs, prizegivings, awards evenings, public lectures, film screenings, concerts and theatre.

The tiered fixed seating that is its strength for audiences also limits flexibility, so banquet-style dinners and trade exhibitions are less natural fits. Catering, breakout space and audio-visual arrangements should be confirmed directly with the volunteer management committee, as detailed specifications are not comprehensively published. Bookings can be made through the hall or the Dunedin City Council community facilities listings. For organisers working on the Taieri or wanting a venue with genuine local history, it is a distinctive alternative to the central-city rooms among Dunedin's conference and event venues.
