About Nelson Cathedral

Nelson Cathedral — formally Christ Church Cathedral — is the Anglican cathedral at 1 Trafalgar Square, at the head of Trafalgar Street in central Nelson. It is the seat of the Bishop of Nelson and the mother church of the Anglican Diocese of Nelson. The hill on which it stands carries the Māori name Piki Mai, meaning "come up hither". Positioned at the top of Nelson's main retail street, the building forms a terminating vista for the city centre and is within walking distance of the CBD's hotels, cafés and restaurants.

History

An earlier church was built on a different site in 1851 to a design by Frederick Thatcher, and enlarged in 1859. It was named Christ Church Cathedral in 1866 and enlarged again. Construction of the present cathedral began in 1925 and was completed in 1965. It was consecrated by Bishop Peter Sutton on 14 April 1972. The building is in a Modernist Gothic Revival style, measuring 58 metres in length and 27 metres in width, with a tower 35 metres high.

Most of the marble used came from the Pakikiruna Range near Tākaka. It was originally intended to be laid in blocks, but following the 1929 Murchison earthquake this was judged too risky and too expensive, so the marble was ground down and mixed with plaster — giving the interior its unusual appearance and colour. The steps are granite sourced from Tonga Beach in Tasman Bay.

The cathedral's first pipe organ was built by T.C. Lewis in London and shipped to Nelson in 1871. It was rebuilt in 1932 and later overhauled, and now consists of around 2,500 pipes across three manuals and pedals, with a detached electric-action console on a gallery opposite the pipes in the chancel.

Spaces and facilities

The cathedral is first and foremost a place of worship, but it is regularly hired for concerts, ceremonies and public presentations. The venue lists an audience capacity of 350, reduced to 300 during the Christmas Tree Festival. Alongside the organ there is a grand piano and flexible staging.

Technical provision includes a sound system and four high-resolution cameras, which allow an event to be shown in-house on two large screens, live streamed, recorded, or any combination of these. The cathedral describes its acoustics as particularly suited to singing voices and choral presentation, and promotes itself for choral and chamber music. An experienced events team assists hirers with planning.

The cathedral does not operate as a conference centre, and no on-site catering or breakout rooms are advertised.

Suitability for meetings and events

This is a single-space heritage venue rather than a multi-stream conference facility. It suits plenary sessions, opening or closing ceremonies, awards presentations, gala concerts and civic or commemorative occasions where a distinctive setting and strong acoustics matter, and it pairs naturally with other central-city Nelson venues for catering, accommodation and breakout requirements.
