The New Plymouth Sportfishing & Underwater Club sits on the harbourfront at Ocean View Parade, with its clubrooms looking out across the water. The club was formed in 1995 through the merger of the New Plymouth Underwater Club and the Taranaki Cruising and Sportfishing Club, and now has around 1,200 members. Alongside fishing, diving and boating, it runs a restaurant and hires the clubrooms out for corporate and private functions.
The main function space seats up to 150 and has sea views. It is air-conditioned, modern and comfortable, with an on-site kitchen and bar. A big screen and PA system are available, and the room can be set a number of ways, from theatre or meeting-style seating through to breakfast and lunch layouts.
Day hire is offered specifically for meetings, seminars, conferences, staff training and group training, which makes this one of the more genuinely business-ready club venues in New Plymouth. Catering comes from the on-site kitchen, so a full day can run with morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea without bringing in an external supplier, then move straight into drinks at the bar for an evening function. The club restaurant is open Thursday, Friday and Sunday evenings from 5.30pm, with bookings required for groups of 10 or more.
The club has a boat ramp and is built around water-based activity, which opens up obvious incentive and team-day options: a fishing or boating activity followed by a meal in the clubrooms. Members can hire the club at a reduced rate for both personal and business functions.
The club notes it is often booked well in advance, so early enquiry is sensible. For a conference dinner, an awards night, a company AGM or a one-day seminar for up to 150 people with a genuine waterfront outlook, it is a strong and straightforward choice among New Plymouth venues.
