Pohutu Lodge Motel

Pohutu Lodge Motel sits at 3 Meade Street on the edge of the Whakarewarewa Thermal Valley in Rotorua, and takes its name from the Pohutu Geyser a few hundred metres away. The Te Puia cultural centre is close by, the Rotorua Golf Club is across the road, and the city centre is about 2 km away.

The lodge has 11 units, and the accommodation is notably spacious for a motel of this size: most units have two separate bedrooms, and several are two-storey apartments. Studios and apartments have kitchenettes or kitchens, spa baths, internet-browser televisions with Freeview, ironing facilities and free Wi-Fi. Parking is on site, along with guest laundry, barbecue facilities and mountain bike storage.

The mountain biking connection matters here. The lodge is within a few minutes' drive of the Waipa and Redwoods carparks that serve the Whakarewarewa Forest trail network, and it is set up for riders with dedicated bike storage. That makes it a realistic base for incentive groups and corporate teams building a Rotorua programme around riding, as well as for delegates attending events in the thermal valley.

Pohutu Lodge has no conference or meeting rooms and no restaurant, so it functions as accommodation rather than a venue. Its value to organisers is the multi-bedroom layout: a small team or an incentive group can be housed in relatively few units, sharing living space and cooking facilities, which is often more cost-effective than an equivalent number of hotel rooms. The operators state they can accommodate both individuals and larger travelling groups.
