Sugarloaf is the restaurant at Flockhill, a working high-country sheep station and lodge in the Craigieburn Valley on the Great Alpine Highway (SH73), between Springfield and Arthur's Pass. Flockhill describes the property as 36,000 acres carrying roughly 11,600 sheep. The restaurant sits about a 90-minute drive from Christchurch and Christchurch International Airport, with large windows facing the Sugarloaf peak the restaurant is named for.
Sugarloaf operates on a seasonal set tasting menu, built on farm-to-fork principles. Produce is grown mainly in the Flockhill garden or foraged from the station. The garden is designed around companion planting, and a series of raised beds, glasshouses and tunnel houses extend the growing season well beyond the natural limits of the high-country climate; Flockhill states it grows more than 30 varieties of fruits, vegetables, herbs and edible flowers, with a full-time gardener.
Proteins are sourced with the same intent: Flockhill lamb, beef from neighbouring properties, exclusively spear-caught fish and pasture-raised chicken appear regularly, with quail, duck, venison and pork rotating through. Cooking is largely over wood fire, supported by a dry-ageing fridge and a dedicated preserving and fermentation room.
The kitchen is led by chef Taylor Cullen, who designed the open kitchen and who trained in fine-dining restaurants in New Zealand and Europe before heading the kitchen at Sydney farm-to-table restaurant Chiswick.
Flockhill was named by *Time* as one of the World's Greatest Places 2026. In the 2025 Cuisine Good Food Guide, Sugarloaf holds one hat with a score of 17.5. Flockhill also states that 2.5% of revenue is directed to removing exotic invading species such as gorse and wilding pines from the station.
Sugarloaf is primarily the dining room for the lodge, which takes a maximum of 36 guests, so scale is deliberately limited. Key points for organisers:
Sugarloaf suits small, high-value incentive groups, executive retreats and pre- or post-conference programmes where a genuine destination dining experience matters more than headcount. It is not a large-capacity function venue, and organisers should engage the lodge directly and well ahead of time. See more Canterbury venues.
