Te Awa Winery Restaurant and Cellar Door is at 2375 State Highway 50, RD5, Hastings, in the Gimblett Gravels wine-growing area of Hawke's Bay. The restaurant and cellar door sit among the vineyard, in a building whose design takes its lead from Hawke's Bay rural architecture.
Te Awa was founded in 1992 by the Lawson family, long-established Hawke's Bay grape growers, who bought a corner block at the intersection of Ngatarawa Road and State Highway 50. The property was originally known as Te Awa Farm. The full name of the site is Te Awa o Te Atua — "river of God" — a reference to the subterranean streams running beneath the vineyards.
In 2003 the Lawson family sold Te Awa to Julian Robertson, the American investor and founder of Tiger Management, and Napa Valley vineyard owner Reg Oliver.
Te Awa Collection is structured in three tiers: Left Field, a multi-region exploratory range; Te Awa Single Estate, covering Gimblett Gravels chardonnay, syrah and merlot cabernet; and Kidnapper Cliffs, a super-premium range from a dedicated 17-hectare block.
Winery restaurants of this type are a core part of the Hawke's Bay incentive and conference programme, and Te Awa suits vineyard lunches, partner programmes, client hospitality, cellar-door tastings as a group activity, and conference free-time excursions. Its position on SH50 makes it a natural stop on a Gimblett Gravels wine touring route, and it is a short drive from Hastings and Napier. Group capacity, private-dining space, exclusive-use options and seasonal hours should be confirmed directly with the venue.
