Te Whare Whakatere houses the Ashburton Library and Civic Centre on Baring Square East, and offers a range of meeting spaces for public hire through the Ashburton District Council.
Published capacities include small rooms for 5 to 8 people, Rūma Pohowera (Banded Dotterel) on Level 1 for 16, Ōtūwharekai (Ashburton Lakes) for 20, the Wakanui Room in the Emergency Operations Centre for 30, and a ground-floor Event Space for 70. An AV studio is also available for hire.
Most rooms have a TV display for presentations via HDMI or wireless casting, plus video-conferencing capability. The Ashburton Lakes room and the Emergency Operations Centre rooms include kitchen facilities. Bookings need at least 72 hours' notice and can be made up to 30 days ahead. Tiered pricing (free, half or full rate) applies depending on community benefit.
