About The Boneline

About this place

The Boneline is a family-owned vineyard and winery at 376 Ram Paddock Road, Amberley RD2, in the Waipara district of North Canterbury. It lies about 10km from Amberley and around 60km north of Christchurch, an easy hour's drive from the city and a natural inclusion on a Waipara Valley wine itinerary.

The family began planting in 1989, making them among the earlier growers to identify Waipara's potential as a premium wine region. The name refers to a line in the Waipara River which exposes fossilised bone when the water drops. The property covers a substantial landholding with around 18 hectares under vine, planted to Chardonnay, Riesling, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah. Wine is produced under The Boneline and Waipara West labels and is exported to markets including Europe, Hong Kong, Singapore, South Korea and Canada, as well as being listed in New Zealand restaurants.

The vineyards are BioGro-certified organic, and the business participates in New Zealand Winegrowers' Sustainable Winegrowing programme. For organisers with sustainability criteria in their venue selection, that certification is documented rather than merely claimed.

### The cellar door

The cellar door sits directly in front of the working winery, so visitors see the production side of the operation while they taste. The format is a seated tasting rather than a stand-up bar, supported by a sharing-style snacks menu, a library wine selection and a wine store. A tasting fee has been published at $30 per person. On weekends a vineyard walkway is open to cellar door guests, with interpretive signage along the route explaining the different blocks — useful as a structured, low-cost activity for a visiting group.

Published hours are Thursday to Monday, 11am to 4pm, closed Tuesday and Wednesday. Cellar door hours in Waipara change seasonally and around vintage, so confirm before committing a group.

### Function and event capability

The sources reviewed describe The Boneline as a cellar door and tasting venue with a snacks menu; they do not set out private dining rooms, function spaces or event capacities, and no such capability is claimed here. Group bookings and seated tasting arrangements should be confirmed directly with the winery, including maximum numbers and whether a private tasting can be arranged outside standard hours.

Suitability: best considered as a hosted tasting or incentive touring stop rather than a meetings or conference venue. The seated tasting format, the working-winery setting, the organic certification and the self-guided vineyard walk give a visiting group genuine content, which works well as one component of a North Canterbury day out of the city alongside other Christchurch venues. Transport should be arranged given the tasting focus and the distance from town.
