The Hotel Nelson is a 78-room hotel at 40 Waimea Road, in Nelson South just outside the central retail core. It combines conventional hotel rooms with self-contained apartment stock, which makes it a practical base for mixed groups — delegates on single-night stays alongside families, contractors or longer-staying visitors.

Rooms and facilities

• 78 air-conditioned rooms, ranging from studio and superior rooms through to one, two, three and four-bedroom apartments.
• Rooms include a refrigerator, tea and coffee facilities, work desk, hairdryer, iron and ironing board, and TV.
• A heated outdoor swimming pool and a barbecue area.
• Complimentary off-street parking for all guests, and complimentary unlimited WiFi.

The hotel is roughly a seven-minute walk from the city centre, Nelson Hospital and the Nelson colleges, and around ten minutes' drive from Nelson Airport and Tahunanui Beach. The parking and the hospital proximity are the two points organisers most often cite: delegates driving in from Richmond, Motueka or Blenheim do not have to contend with central-city parking.

Meetings and events

The conference rooms sit at the rear of the complex and all have natural lighting. Published listings describe three to four function spaces seating from 4 to around 80 people, which covers small board meetings through to a mid-sized training day or seminar.

Named rooms and capacities include:

• Fairfield Room — up to 70 theatre style, 50 banquet, and 25 in U-shape or classroom configuration.
• Kawai Room — up to 40 theatre style, or up to 18 delegates in U-shape or classroom.

The combination of on-site accommodation, free parking, catering from the in-house kitchen and daylight meeting rooms makes this a workable one-stop venue for day meetings and small residential conferences.

Dining

Flames on Forty Bar and Restaurant is the hotel's on-site outlet, open for breakfast and dinner. Having a licensed restaurant on the property means conference catering, delegate breakfasts and an informal group dinner can all be handled without moving the group off site.

Suitability

Best suited to small and mid-sized meetings, training courses, board meetings, sales conferences and regional seminars of up to about 80 delegates, particularly where free on-site parking and apartment-style accommodation matter more than a central Trafalgar Street address. For larger plenary requirements, look to the bigger Nelson venues.
