The Incubator Creative Hub is an arts organisation and creative precinct based at the Historic Village, 159 Seventeenth Avenue, Tauranga. It is a registered charitable trust and a not-for-profit, run with a large volunteer contribution, and describes itself as a collective and supportive environment and a platform for exhibitions and performances of independent art, music and theatre.
The Incubator launched in October 2013, taking on what had for many years been a derelict barn in the Historic Village. That building — the big red barn — is now The Incubator Gallery & Studios, and the organisation has since expanded across several buildings within the Village.
The hub is made up of a number of creative spaces, including:
Studio spaces are allocated by application and are tailored to the resident's practice. Resident creatives are expected to be present three to four days a week, to share a weekend roster, and to be available for significant events such as Waitangi Day, Jazz Village, the Multicultural Festival and the Tauranga Fringe Festival.
The Incubator is not a conventional conference venue and does not present itself as one. Its relevance to business events is as a creative and cultural component: exhibition openings and receptions, hands-on workshops, team-building and incentive activities with working artists, and cultural programming with a genuine local and Ngā Toi Māori dimension. Because it sits inside the Historic Village, organisers can pair an Incubator activity with the Village's formal meeting rooms and catering, and with the galleries, studios, shops and cafes across the wider site. Organisers should confirm space availability and capacities directly, as the buildings are working studios and gallery spaces first.
