About

About The Trafalgar Centre

The Trafalgar Centre is the largest indoor multi-purpose events venue in the Nelson and Tasman region. Located at 7 Paru Paru Road in The Wood, close to Trafalgar Park and a short walk from central Nelson, it is owned and operated by Nelson City Council as part of the council's venues portfolio. It suits organisers running large-format events — exhibitions, trade fairs, conferences, concerts, gala dinners and sporting fixtures — that need a single, column-free floor plate rather than a hotel ballroom.

Capacity and configuration

The main arena is a flexible open space that can be laid out for court sport, staging, plenary seating, banqueting or exhibition stands. Published capacities vary by configuration: council and trade listings cite around 2,460 for basketball and netball, approximately 1,974 for concert seating, and up to 1,500 for banquet-style dining. Some trade listings quote alternative figures, including theatre-style seating of around 2,300, banquet dining for 700 or more at tables, and a maximum standing concert capacity of about 4,500. Organisers should confirm the exact figure for their intended layout with the venue.

The floor can be divided for court use — configurable as two tennis courts or four basketball courts — which also helps when splitting a large exhibition or activation. Alongside the main arena, the complex includes the Victory Room, a smaller space used for meetings, breakouts, functions and committee sessions, and a northern extension that adds further usable area.

History

The centre was built in 1972 and opened in 1973, designed by Nelson architect Alex Bowman. Constructed from a series of timber arches on reclaimed land, it was closed in late 2013 following seismic assessment, prompting resident tenant the Nelson Giants basketball team to relocate temporarily to Saxton Stadium. Approval was given for approximately $16.6 million of earthquake strengthening and redevelopment, with the building reopening from late 2016 and fully back in service in early 2017, in time for the Adam Chamber Music Festival that February. In 2019 it was named EVANZ Medium Venue of the Year.

Events

The venue regularly hosts basketball and netball, indoor football, trade and home shows, exhibitions, charity galas, quizzes, concerts and corporate conferences. It also hosted the WDF World Cup in 1981, the only staging of that event in New Zealand.

Suitability

The Trafalgar Centre is best suited to large conferences with a substantial exhibition or trade component, regional gala dinners, awards evenings and major public-facing events. Delegates are typically accommodated at nearby hotels; see other Nelson venues for complementary options.
