About Hundertwasser Art Centre with Wairau Maori Art Gallery

The Hundertwasser Art Centre with Wairau Māori Art Gallery stands at the Town Basin on the Hātea River in central Whangārei, a waterfront site chosen by Austrian painter, architect and ecologist Friedensreich Hundertwasser himself for its beauty, cultural significance and proximity to water. Hundertwasser lived near Kawakawa in the Bay of Islands for much of the last three decades of his life, and the building is one of just over 40 authentic Hundertwasser architectural projects worldwide — and the last to be built anywhere.

The Centre opened in February 2022 after almost 30 years of design, debate and volunteer-led fundraising, and has since welcomed more than 180,000 local, national and international visitors. It is operated by the Whangārei Art Trust, a Council Controlled Organisation of Whangārei District Council, which also looks after the Whangārei Art Museum. A cooperation agreement with the Hundertwasser Non-Profit Foundation in Vienna governs the authenticity of the work, and the project has been developed alongside Māori partners including the Wairau Māori Art Gallery Charitable Trust Board and Te Parawhau, the local hapū who supported the project from its inception.

What visitors see

There are two exhibition spaces. *Hundertwasser in New Zealand 1973–2000* presents original paintings, graphic art, tapestries, ecological works and architectural models, and forms the largest collection of Hundertwasser artworks outside Vienna. On the ground floor, the Wairau Māori Art Gallery is the world's first public gallery dedicated to contemporary Māori art, showing changing exhibitions of Toi Iho-certified artists. The name is apt: *wairau* translates as "one hundred waters", the same meaning as Hundertwasser.

The building itself is a large part of the experience. Its award-winning Afforested Roof carries native planting, and visitors can climb the golden cupola for views over the Hātea River and the Whangārei cityscape. Inside there is also a small theatre screening films about Hundertwasser, an Activity Centre running programmes for adults, groups and schools, and a MuseumShop stocking Hundertwasser applied art alongside Māori books and jewellery. Guests can self-guide, book a guided tour, or use an audio guide that they can take away with them afterwards.

Meetings, incentives and events

The Centre actively hosts private tours and events, and is a straightforward fit for incentive groups and conference partner programmes visiting Northland. Multiple spaces are available for hire, including the foyer areas and the Activity Centre, with up to 120 guests accommodated across the downstairs spaces. The Activity Centre is set up with tables, chairs, a projector and a sound system, and seats up to 60 theatre style, which suits presentations, awards moments and workshop sessions. Private group guided tours can be combined with hospitality or hands-on workshops.

Catering and bar management are handled by the Aqua Restaurant-Café on the first floor, which can also open outside the Centre's standard operating hours; alternative catering and BYO arrangements can be discussed. Advance booking is required for group tours and venue hire.

For planners working in Whangārei, the Centre offers something genuinely singular — an architecturally significant building, a nationally important art collection and a Māori cultural programme in one waterfront location, within easy walking distance of the Town Basin's cafés and marina.
