EEA2026 takes the electricity sector's largest conference to NZICC with a sold-out exhibition floor

MICE editorial — 23 August 2026 Auckland Tier A

New Zealand's electricity supply sector holds its largest annual conference and technology exhibition at Auckland's New Zealand International Convention Centre from 22 to 24 September 2026. The 140-stand exhibition floor has sold out, and the organiser reports more than 1,200 people through the doors at each of the past two editions.

The Electricity Engineers' Association stages its 2026 conference and technology exhibition at the New Zealand International Convention Centre in Auckland from 22 to 24 September, under the theme Powering Prosperity: He Puna Waiora. The exhibition floor has already sold out, with the association directing late enquiries to a waitlist held by the conference organiser.

Scale is the defining feature. Association chief executive Nicki Sutherland writes on the EEA's conference page that the last edition drew more than 1,200 people through the doors, all of whom had access to 150 exhibition stands. The same page describes the event as the electricity sector's largest conference and calls the attached technology exhibition the largest annual sector event in the southern hemisphere, noting that it draws international suppliers with their latest technology.

For this edition the association's sponsorship material sets the expectation at over 600 delegates plus exhibitors and visitors, and 140 technology exhibition stands. The same material records over 1,200 people through the doors in both 2024 and 2025.

The presentation programme is published on the dedicated conference site at confer.nz/eea2026 and spans three days of keynote addresses, panel discussions, technical paper presentations, workshops and the association's annual awards ceremony. Abstract submissions closed on 16 April 2026 and early-bird delegate registration closed on 23 June 2026.

The association's own event calendar lists several satellite sessions running at the NZICC alongside the main programme: a pre-conference workshop on building distribution system operator capability in Aotearoa on Tuesday 22 September from 9am to 12.30pm; a diversity cocktail event the same afternoon from 4pm to 5.30pm; a Young EEA breakfast at 7am on Wednesday 23 September; and a bushfire resilience breakfast at 7am on Thursday 24 September.

Who runs it

The Electricity Engineers' Association is the industry body for New Zealand's electricity supply sector, describing itself as an electricity supply industry voice to government, regulators, stakeholders, professional bodies and the media. Its About page states it works with and represents more than 76 corporate member organisations and more than 550 individual professional members.

Beyond the annual conference, the association runs professional development courses, technical forums and workshops, publishes technical and safety guidance, and represents New Zealand in national and international standards development. Work listed on its site includes the FlexTalk flexibility programme, streamlining of network connections, worker and public safety campaigns, and asset management guidance including the national equipment defect reporting system.

The conference has a documented run of recent editions. The 2024 and 2025 conferences both hold dedicated archives on the association's site, including published technical papers and galleries covering pre-conference workshops, the opening keynote and panel, the diversity breakfast, the technology exhibition and the awards. Conference management for 2026 is handled by Confer, which hosts the official EEA2026 site.

Who it's for

The association's description of past attendance covers industry chief executives and senior managers, engineering and asset management staff, technical, safety and business development managers, system analysts and planners, field staff and supervisors, engineering students and academics from New Zealand universities, government officials, consultants and contracting staff, and standards writers.

That mix spans network companies, generators, retailers, suppliers, regulators and researchers. The exhibition component adds a supplier audience: equipment manufacturers and service providers, including international ones, taking stands to show technology to the sector's technical buyers.

The venue

The NZICC at 101 Hobson Street, Auckland Central, opened in February 2026 and is owned and operated by SkyCity Entertainment Group in partnership with the New Zealand government. The venue states it is the only New Zealand venue with official International Convention Centre status.

Its published specifications give a gross floor area of 32,500sqm set up for 33 meeting spaces, a 2,852-seat theatre divisible into two 1,235-seat theatres, and a maximum event capacity of 4,500. The exhibition space, Ariki Hall, sits on Level 3 at Hobson Street ground level and covers 6,708sqm with a nine-metre central ceiling, accommodating up to 400 3m x 3m booths and divisible into three areas. The venue lists direct truck access from Hobson Street and two nine-tonne truck lifts for set-up and pack-down, which is the operative detail for an exhibition of 140 stands.

Additional venue entrances are at 83 Wellesley Street West and 50 Nelson Street. Onsite paid parking at 46 Nelson Street holds 1,327 spaces including accessible bays and electric vehicle charging points. The venue records more than 8,000 hotel rooms and 750 dining options within a short walk in the surrounding CBD, and puts Auckland International Airport 25km away.

Why it matters for New Zealand MICE

A conference drawing 1,200-plus attendees with a 140-stand exhibition sits at the upper end of the domestic New Zealand business events market. EEA2026 is also one of the larger tests of the NZICC's exhibition capability in the venue's first year of operation, running the Ariki Hall floor at roughly a third of its stated 400-booth capacity for a three-day sector event.

The booking pattern is instructive. Association conferences with attached trade exhibitions carry a delegate base that is largely recurring and an exhibitor base that commits early; the EEA exhibition sold out ahead of the event with a waitlist in operation, which is the kind of demand signal venues and organisers use when sizing future editions.

For Auckland, the event falls in mid-September, outside the peak summer visitor season, and concentrates a national and partly international professional audience in the central city for three days. With published attendance above 1,200 in successive years, it functions as a repeat fixture on the New Zealand conference calendar rather than a one-off.
