Infection prevention nurses take Tākina for 'Lights, Camera, Prevention!' in August

MICE editorial — 23 July 2026 Wellington Tier A

The Infection Prevention & Control Nurses College, an NZNO specialist college, brings its three-day national conference to Wellington's Tākina from 26-28 August 2026, themed 'Lights, Camera, Prevention!' with national and international IPC keynotes.

A national IPC conference lands in Wellington

The Infection Prevention & Control Nurses College (IPCNC) will hold its 2026 conference at Tākina, the Wellington Convention & Exhibition Centre, from 26 to 28 August 2026. The organiser confirms the three-day programme under the theme "Lights, Camera, Prevention!", a nod to Wellington's movie-making industry that frames a showcase of infection prevention and control (IPC) work "from around the motu, as well as globally".

The event is recorded under two names, "IPCNC Conference 2026" and "Infection Prevention & Control Nurses College Conference 2026". These refer to the same event: both the college's own website and the dedicated conference site title it the "Infection Prevention & Control Nurses College (IPCNC) Conference" at Tākina on the same dates.

Who runs it

The conference is run by the Infection Prevention & Control Nurses College, which the organiser describes as a specialist College of the New Zealand Nurses Organisation (NZNO). The college operates from the NZNO office at Level 3, 57 Willis Street, Wellington, and maintains a professional-development remit that includes an IPC framework, education programmes, funding and awards, and its newsletter "Controlla".

Who it is for and what is on the programme

The organiser positions the conference for a broad clinical and public-health audience: nurses, doctors, allied health, clinical leaders and educators, public health professionals, researchers, policy makers, and healthcare quality and safety teams, from the public, private (including aged residential care) and non-profit sectors.

The draft programme runs from a Mihi Whakatau at 8:30am on Wednesday 26 August through to the conference close at 2:40pm on Friday 28 August. It features keynotes from international and national IPC figures including Jincy Jerry and Belinda Henderson, parallel presentation streams, quickfire poster sessions, a national IPC update from Health New Zealand leads, the IPCNC AGM, and a closing debate ("Sink the sinks or sustain the sinks?"). Topics span IPC leadership, antimicrobial stewardship, environmental cleaning and waterborne pathogens, Candida auris and CPO management, genome sequencing, artificial intelligence in IPC, and sustainability. Social elements include a welcome function and a "Wellywood Glamour" conference dinner.

Tākina as the venue

The organiser describes Tākina as a purpose-built, waterfront convention and exhibition centre in central Wellington, with the name meaning "to invoke". As delegate-movement context, the organiser notes Tākina sits about 15 minutes from Wellington Airport and is within walking distance of the city's dining, coffee and shopping, with a range of nearby accommodation options and on-site catering. The compact, harbourside CBD setting means most delegate movement between hotels, the venue and evening functions is walkable, a practical consideration for a multi-day medical conference drawing attendees from across Aotearoa.

Why it matters for NZ MICE

The IPCNC Conference is a recurring national association event in a specialist medical sector, anchored to a NZNO college and rotating into Wellington's flagship convention centre. For the New Zealand business-events market it represents the kind of mid-sized, multi-day professional-association conference, complete with an exhibition/trades component, sponsored streams and a gala dinner, that underpins Tākina's role since opening and reinforces Wellington's positioning as a host for health and research meetings.
