The 16th International Coral Reef Symposium comes to New Zealand for the first time - six days at NZICC in July 2026 bringing thousands of the world's coral reef scientists to Auckland.
For the first time in its history, the International Coral Reef Symposium is being held in New Zealand. The 16th edition (ICRS 2026) runs from Sunday 19 to Friday 24 July 2026 at the New Zealand International Convention Centre in central Auckland - six days that place the largest gathering in coral reef science on a Southern Hemisphere and Pacific stage for the first time.
Held every four years under the auspices of the International Coral Reef Society, ICRS is the defining event of its field: the point at which marine scientists, conservation practitioners, policymakers, aquarium professionals, educators and students from around the world converge to set the agenda for reef research and management. The society confirms the 2026 programme runs under the theme "Working together to ensure a future for coral reefs," with keynotes, scientific sessions, workshops and poster presentations across the week.
The 2026 symposium is led by a New Zealand-anchored scientific committee: Prof Simon Davy of Te Herenga Waka - Victoria University of Wellington, Dr Murray Ford of the University of Auckland, and Dr Stacy Jupiter of the Wildlife Conservation Society. Bringing ICRS to New Zealand is being framed by organisers as a deliberate opportunity to foreground Pacific Islander knowledge and traditions of reef management alongside the global science.
Beyond the research community, ICRS 2026 draws conservation organisations, government agencies, aquarium and industry representatives and a large student contingent. Editions of this symposium have historically drawn into the thousands of delegates, which puts ICRS 2026 among the larger international congresses on New Zealand's 2026 calendar.
NZICC - New Zealand's purpose-built national convention centre on Hobson Street - is the host venue, inside Auckland's central business district. For an event of this scale the CBD location matters: it places the bulk of the city's convention-grade accommodation within walking distance of the sessions, and keeps delegate movement between hotels and the venue short across a six-day programme. The main logistics pressure point is the airport transfer corridor - the roughly half-hour run between Auckland Airport and the city - at the start and end of the week, when several thousand international arrivals compress into a narrow window.
A first-time hosting of a congress this significant lifts a destination's international standing. It brings a large, high-value, globally distributed delegate base into Auckland for a full week in July, tests the city's convention and accommodation capacity at scale, and positions New Zealand as a serious host for the world's major scientific congresses.
