Larnach Castle is a Gothic Revival castle and garden estate at 145 Camp Road on the Otago Peninsula, about 20 minutes from central Dunedin. It was designed by Dunedin architect R.A. Lawson for entrepreneur and politician William Larnach, who called it "The Camp". Construction began in 1871, the main structure was complete by 1874 and the ballroom was added in 1887. The Barker family has owned and restored it since 1967, and in 2018 it was designated a New Zealand Landmark by Heritage New Zealand.
Three stay options are on the grounds: Larnach Lodge, Camp Estate and Stable Stay. Please confirm current room numbers directly with the property.
The gardens are recognised as a Garden of International Significance and include the Patterned Garden, Lost Rock Garden, Serpentine Walk, Rain Forest and South Seas Garden. A tower offers 360-degree views of the peninsula. The Ballroom Cafe operates on site, with Victorian High Tea and Castle Dinner experiences.
The castle and grounds host weddings, conferences, dinner dances and corporate events. Specific room capacities are not published, so request them from the venue. It holds a Qualmark endorsement and New Zealand Gardens Trust recognition, per its website.
Larnach suits executive retreats, gala dinners and small-group incentives wanting a heritage setting, with wildlife attractions nearby. See other Dunedin venues.
