Pouakai Cabins is private rural accommodation at 1878 Mangorei Road, about 20 minutes from New Plymouth, at the gateway to the Mangorei Track in Egmont National Park. The property sits at 530 metres above sea level beneath the sub-alpine kāmahi forest of the Pouakai Ranges, surrounded by native bush.
### The accommodation
The operator currently lists one self-contained cabin, the Private Bush Retreat. It is reached by a five-minute walk along a formed limestone track through native bush; because the cabin is deliberately set apart for privacy, guests carry in their provisions or use a trolley supplied by the owners. There is no wi-fi at the cabin and mobile coverage is limited, which the owners present as part of the appeal — full wi-fi is available at the owners' residence if guests need it. A breakfast hamper can be pre-ordered, with cooked, Bircher muesli or combined options.
### The setting
The cabins sit on a small self-sufficient working farmlet with beef cattle grazing the surrounding paddocks. Guests are welcome to use the extensive gardens, which include a large greenhouse producing organic vegetables year-round, berry tunnel houses, an orchard and free-ranging chickens. Much of the property runs on solar power, allowing the owners to live off-grid for much of the year. The owners note Taranaki's full climatic range here, from warm summers to occasional winter snowfall.
### Walking and activities
The Mangorei Track starts at the gate. From there it is roughly two hours' walk to Pouakai Hut and views of Mount Taranaki, with the Pouakai Tarns a little further on. Guests staying in the Bush Retreat also have exclusive access to the owners' private one-kilometre walking track through the Pukekotahuna Headwaters Reserve. A golf course is about ten minutes away, with clubs and carts available for hire, and New Plymouth's cafés and restaurants are a 20-minute drive.
### Meetings and events
Pouakai Cabins advertises no meeting rooms, function spaces or conference services, and with a single cabin it cannot host a group. It should not be listed as a meeting venue. Where it does have a role in the incentive and retreat space is as a deliberately disconnected add-on: a quiet, off-grid night at the national park boundary for a small number of people, appended to a programme based in the city.
### Suitability
Best for couples, individuals and organisers looking for a genuinely secluded overnight experience close to Mount Taranaki. Not suitable for anyone who needs connectivity, vehicle access to the door, or space for a group.
