The Regent Theatre stands on The Octagon in central Dunedin, a historic performing-arts venue and one of the city's grandest interiors. Opened on 1 June 1928 as a picture palace, it featured an elaborately decorated revived-baroque interior and its own resident orchestra to accompany silent films. Purchased by the Otago Theatre Trust in 1973, it was adapted as a live-performance venue and registered as a Category 1 historic building in 1987.
The theatre seats around 1,650 across its auditorium and hosts a diverse programme of plays, ballet, orchestral concerts, live shows and film festivals. Its scale and heritage character also suit large ceremonies, conferences with a plenary focus, gala events and cultural performances.
For events needing a substantial, characterful auditorium in central Dunedin, the Regent Theatre offers a distinguished setting with the capacity for major audiences. Discover more Dunedin venues.
