Wētā Workshop Unleashed is a behind-the-scenes film-effects experience on Level 5, 88 Federal Street, in Auckland's SkyCity precinct. It is run by Wētā Workshop, the Wellington-based studio with five Academy Awards, and shows how practical movie effects are made.
Visitors see animatronics, creatures, alien robots and miniature sets while learning how filmmakers build physical worlds. The standard guided tour runs for about 90 minutes, and creative workshops run for 60 to 90 minutes. Twilight tours depart in the evening (5:10 pm and 6:10 pm according to the venue). Mandarin-guided tours and combination tickets with the Sky Tower are also offered. It is open seven days a week except Christmas Day.
The venue offers private tours (priced on enquiry) and venue hire for team building, functions and cocktail parties. Capacities for hire are not stated on the pages reviewed, so confirm numbers and catering arrangements with the venue.
