The largest gala and banquet venues in Wellington for 1,000 or more guests

MICE editorial — 23 August 2026

A live ranking of Wellington spaces that seat 1,000 or more guests at round tables for large gala dinners and awards nights.

A thousand-guest gala is a different category of event from a large conference dinner. At this scale the room has to hold a hundred tables, a stage, a dance floor, AV positions, bars and service aisles simultaneously — and in Wellington only a very small number of spaces can do it. The list below shows which ones, ranked by stated banquet capacity.

The questions that decide the venue at 1,000 covers are operational, not aesthetic. Can the kitchen plate a thousand meals in a window short enough that the first tables are not finished before the last are served? How many service staff does that require, and is that number in the quote? Where do a thousand people arrive, queue for a pre-dinner drink, and collect coats? And how long does the room take to reset if you are also using it for a daytime session?

The ranking is generated live from the MICE record using banquet capacity, not theatre. Published figures generally assume tables only, so expect to lose seats once the stage, dance floor and AV footprint are placed. Confirm the working number with the venue. For smaller thresholds and other centres, use the capacities index.

Frequently asked

How many Wellington venues can seat 1,000 at round tables?

Very few — the live list above shows the current record. At this scale you are looking at the largest flat-floor halls and purpose-built convention space rather than hotel ballrooms.

Is plated service realistic for 1,000 guests?

It can be, but only with a kitchen and staffing plan built for it. Ask how many covers can be plated at once and how many courses fit your run time. Alternating drop or shared-platter service is often used to keep pace.

How much of the room does a stage and dance floor consume?

Enough to matter. A stage, dance floor and AV positions commonly remove the equivalent of eight to fifteen tables from a large room. Get a floor plan drawn before you confirm numbers.

Can the same room host the conference and the gala?

Sometimes, but a full reset from theatre or exhibition to banquet takes hours and may require an overnight turnaround. Confirm the reset window and any additional labour charge.

What accommodation is needed for an event this size?

A thousand-guest gala usually draws on the whole central hotel inventory. If guests are travelling, block rooms across several properties well ahead.
