The Grand Hotel is a historic hotel at 2 Bank Street in central Whangārei, a short walk from the city centre and within easy reach of the Town Basin, Northland Events Centre and the Whangārei Art Museum. It provides affordable accommodation for independent travellers, contractors and small groups who want to stay close to town.
Rooms are straightforward hotel accommodation with free Wi-Fi, and some rooms have city views. The hotel has an on-site bar with pool tables and other games, making it a relaxed place to meet up in the evening.
The hotel offers bar and function facilities, suited to informal gatherings, social functions and small group get-togethers rather than large-scale conferences. Planners should contact the hotel directly to confirm spaces, capacities and catering.
A hotel has stood on the site since around 1870. The original building burnt down in the 1890s and was rebuilt in 1900. Originally known as the Commercial Hotel, it was renamed the Grand Hotel after the 1953–54 Royal Tour, when Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip stayed with their entourage. The balcony from which the Queen greeted well-wishers remains a feature of the building.
With its central location, heritage character and in-house bar and function space, the Grand Hotel suits budget-conscious groups, sports teams and social functions looking for a casual base in the heart of Whangārei.
